Fresh produce company Del Monte has announced today that its subsidiary Fresh Del Monte Kenya has partnered with the UN women health and empowerment program.

By the year 2024 Del Monte Kenya has committed to reach 10,000 women amongst the employees and community. They plan to provide reproductive health information and services, as well as addressing other critical health needs.

Through provision of training and dissemination of necessary information via newsletters, pamphlets, and fliers on reproductive health this commitment will be achieved. Del Monte Kenya plans to expand their on-site health services in the existing company’s health clinics and provide reproductive health services and family planning.

“Companies employing millions of women in their global supply chains have an enormous opportunity to invest in the health and empowerment of their workforce, helping meet women right where they are – in the workplace – with critical information and services, while building a healthier, more productive workforce,” said Robyn Russell, Director of Programs and Innovation at the United Nations Foundation’s Universal Access Project, who announced Del Monte Kenya’s commitment during a virtual event for the plenary session of the UN General Assembly titled, “Making the Invisible Visible: Driving Corporate Action on Gender Equality & Women’s Health for the Decade of Action.”

Mrs Vicky Mutungwa , Quality Control  Manager, Del Monte Kenya Limited, said: “At Del Monte Kenya, it is our team member’s well-being that gives us the capacity to provide wholesome, safe and fresh products, and as a company, we do our part by ensuring that our staff is cared for in all that we do.”

Adding, “With women making up 45% of our 6,500 employees, we strive to offer them fair wages, a safe workplace, access to quality reproductive health care, education on family planning and opportunities for growth. This we do, with a strong conviction that we cannot achieve “A Better World Tomorrow’’ without the support, dedication, and talent of each of our team members, including our women.”

Del Monte Kenya will also include in this commitment new health services and training to prevent sexual harassment and Gender-Based Violence in and out of the workplace.

Del Monte Kenya is committed to supporting and empowering women at the workplace and the surrounding community, engaging male employees on gender equality as a part of sustaining the impact on women’s health and empowerment.
